The Future of Ontario Place Project

The Future of Ontario Place Project was made possible by a partnership between the World Monuments Fund, the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto, and Architectural Conservancy Ontario.

Through a research initiative and public campaign, the Future of Ontario Place Project is working to build public knowledge of the heritage values of the site, and to imagine the future of Ontario Place as a public cultural asset for all Ontarians.

Land and Water Acknowledgement

The word “Toronto” is derived from the Mohawk word “Tkaronto”, which means “the place in the water where the trees are standing, the place where the fish weirs are.” This land and water were inhabited and stewarded by the Petun, the Huron Wendat, the Haundenosaunee (hoodt-en-oh-show-nee), the Anishnabeg (ah-nish-naw-bek), the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Chippewa peoples for thousands of years. Tkaronto is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

The Future of Ontario Place Project recognizes the importance of the site to Indigenous histories, cultures, and futures. We support a robust Indigenous consultation by the Government of Ontario prior to the commencement of any development, and the protection of the ecologies which have emerged on the artificial islands since their construction. We are committed to advocating for “meaningful consultation, building respectful relationships, and obtaining the free, prior, and informed consent of Indigenous peoples before proceeding with economic development projects'' per the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report’s Calls to Action.

Through our research, we hope to document Indigenous contributions to Ontario Place. You can learn more about them on our timeline here, which we will continue to update.

Its mission is to educate students, prepare professionals, and cultivate scholars who will play a leading role in creating more culturally engaged, ecologically sustainable, socially just, and artfully conceived environments.

Architectural Conservancy Ontario

Architectural Conservancy Ontario is a charitable organization whose mission is to encourage, through education and advocacy, the conservation and re-use of structures, districts and landscapes of architectural, historic and cultural significance, to inspire and benefit Ontarians.

Over its 87-year history, ACO has helped save hundreds of buildings in communities across Ontario, and raised awareness of the benefits of heritage conservation. In addition to the historic value of older buildings, ACO promotes the social, cultural, economic, and environmental benefits of preservation over demolition.
